Women Rights

Women’s rights establish legal, political, and social rights for women in a
society that traditionally confers more status and freedom to men. Throughout
history, men have had more legal rights and career opportunities than women all
over the world. However, women’s rights guarantee that women will not face any
kind of acumen on the basis of their sex ( Compton’s ).

Male dominance was unsurpassable from the time of the earliest written

historical records. In most traditional societies, women were generally at a

disadvantage. Until the second half of the 20th century, women in

most societies were denied some of the legal and political rights

accorded to men. Although women in much of the world have gained

significant legal rights, many people believe that women still do not

have complete political, economic, and social equality with men

(Encarta).

Throughout history, inherent cultural beliefs gave women very

few options on their roles in society. Many, mostly men, felt that

women were not intellectual enough, so their natural roles were

limited to being homemakers and childbearers (Compton’s). This also

limited women’s education and personal lives. Women generally

accepted their inferior status as their only option( Encarta).

The Industrial Revolution and The Age of Enlightenment, both

caused economic and social changes(Encarta). It provided a favorable

atmosphere for the breakthrough of feminism in the late eighteenth

and nineteenth centuries. During Enlightenment, its leaders, argued

that all individuals were born equal. Unfortunately, the Enlightenment

ideas had very little impact on the legal and political status of women.

As the years of discrimination continued to pass, people all over

the world voiced their opinions. In 1848, the first women’s rights

convention was led by abolitionist Lucretia Mott and feminist Elizabeth

Cady Stanton in Seneca Falls, New York (American). After this
