Description of Occupation/Work Performed
An Elementary School teacher teaches kindergarten and elementary school student's academic, social, and physical skills.  They plan age appropriate activities including many hands-on exercises.  A teacher will prepare lessons, assign homework, evaluate student performance, and maintain classroom discipline.  She or he can use games, music, artwork, films, computers, and other technology to teach children basic skills.  All teachers grade papers, prepare report cards, and lead extracurricular activities.  Elementary teachers also meet with parents, have conferences, and attend workshops.

Starting Salary/Salary Range
The average starting salary for a teacher is $27,000; the average salary after five years is $50,000; and the average salary after fifteen years is $65,000.  According to the National Education Association, public elementary school teachers averaged about $36,400 a year in 1995.  The average hourly rate in the state of Maine is $14.13, with an annual salary for a 40-hour week of $29,390.40 and $25,716.60 for a 35-hour week.

There are about 3,335,040 people in the teaching profession.  Of those 45% are male and 55% are female.

Teachers are employed all over the United States.  They are employed in public and in private schools, as well as in private homes.  There are schools everywhere.

Training/Education needed for job
In the United States public schools teachers are required to be licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Each state's requirements may differ somewhat.  However, all require a bachelor's degree, the completion of an approved teacher education program, and supervised practice teaching.  An elementary school teacher must have a general education in a wide variety of subjects such as art, history, music, and math.  A bachelor's degree in elementary education takes five years.  Those people who plan on becoming teachers early on usually take 24 to 36 credits in a specialized area and 18 to 24 credits in teaching courses.  The fifth year is spent student teaching.  Prospective teachers are advised to acquire skills in communications, organization, and time management.  Upcoming teachers who need certification can enter programs that will grant a master's degree.  States may also issue emergency certificates to people who do not meet all of the requirements, but the state cannot hire enough teachers with regular certif...
