"Only child" is an expression with particular significance in China. In many countries around the world, many families, for various reasons, choose to have one child. However, in China, "one family, one child" has been enacted by law. Since 1978, China has been carrying out the "family plan" policy. By law, each family is limited to having one child, in order to resolve the problem of population overgrowth. People under the age of twenty-one in China are all "an only child", and I am one of them. The policy of "one family, one child" was a big shock to Chinese society. The advantage of this policy is easy to understand, but many new social problems have emerged from this particular policy; such as loneliness and the lack of understanding friendship and love in my generation. An only child in a family usually has a 20-year age gap with his or her parents and it is hard for him or her to live in harmony with other people. These problems finally bring them the sense of loneliness or isolation. In addition, the loneliness is likely to lead the child to self-containment. When the only child is not understood by his or her parents or surroundings, they are likely to approach the extremes. Maybe he or she gets a little closer to their classmates than their parents or becomes mistrusting of their classmates. They keep themselves in their own small world like a snail, only allowing a little contact from the out side world. The "only child" in China who develops loneliness through self-containment may not be the major problem, however, once it happens, it begins to destroy his or her soul and mind. "Only child"="lonely child"? This equation, though true is not what the policy hoped to create.
An only child bears the burdens of soci...
