Thinking how it to start an essay on a theme as large as this is almost as difficult as finding the subject matter to write about.  So I have decided to split my essay into two main sections, the argument for war and the argument against war. The point of this essay is to put all of the main points across about war, and then I'll leave you to decide what you think.

The arguments for war.

A popular view is to say that war has no benefits, but you will discover this to be untrue when you scratch beneath the surface of the cold-blooded massacres.  There is no doubt about it, war is evil.  But where would we be without it?  This may sound like a strange question but without war we would still have all the evil in the world, that would not change, we would just have no way of enforcing human rights onto other countries.  Without conflict, we would still have the dictators too, and the power-hungry leaders of countries too poor to survive who need more land and riches in order to survive.

Without war we would end up being ruled by people who would not shy away from using military power.  Only the other countries of the world would have few means to stop them, since talking and bargaining rarely gets anywhere with these people.

As you can see, the view that we can eradicate war by not entering it is unfeasible.  So knowing that it is almost impossible to get around it, because it will always find a way, what benefits can we find in it?

Firstly, one argument is that war enables men to have their finest hours.  They can be proud that they have fought for their own countries.  This is seen as honour.  However, I see no way that risking your life for the benefit of your country can be called honourable, just suicidal.  If we look at it from the scientific approach, the reason why you exist on the planet is solely to pass your genes onto the next generation.  There is no honour involved.  Animals do not fight wars; they have no real desire to be all-powerful.  They don't care for the country they were born in because they are individuals.  So what drives men to war?  In the majority, the answer is the social pressures, which do not exist in animals.  A man who fights in the war is seen to be courageous.
"Men love war because it allows them to look serious. Because it is the one thing that stops women from laughing at them." - John Fowles, The Magus.
To many men, the army seems like the only option.  For the less successful, and the less skilled men, the war ...
