"The Picture of Dorian Gray " was a reaction against the 19th century's realistic streams. The book, a fantastic melodrama, provoked a storm of hysterical protests when it was published in 1891. The critics thought the book was lacking in moral. It has since become one of Oscar Wilde's most celebrated works.

"If it were I to were to be always young and the picture to grow old…I would give my soul for it." This wish is uttered by the principal character of the book, Dorian Gray. He is a fascinating young man. His friend, the painter Basil Hallward, paints a picture of him.
