Field hockey is a popular modern sport; it is also one of the oldest of competitive sports. Although nobody know for sure the exact beginnings of the game, there is evidence that Egyptians played it over 4,000 years ago. We also know that the Greeks, Romans, Ethiopians, and Aztecs played variations of the game. These games evolved into the modern game of field hockey in England, during the mid-1800’s. In 1849, the first men’s hockey club was formed, which led to the establishment of the Hockey Association in 1886. Since the British Empire was so expansive, the game spread quickly. Starting in 1895, international competitions were played Great Britain and its colonies. Hockey first was an Olympic sport in 1908. It didn’t appear again until the 1920 games. It was featured again in 1928 and has remained a summer Olympic game to this day. Women’s field hockey earned a spot in the Olympics in 1980. Today, we are most familiar with women’s field hockey. However, for many years hockey was considered much too dangerous for females to participate in. In 1887, the first women’s hockey club was started in England. The game spread to America in 1901, while men’s field hockey didn’t start in the U.S. until 1928. The United States Field Hockey Association was formed in 1922. The biggest field hockey tournament is the World Cup. It is held every four years with twelve men’s and twelve women’s teams competing for the title of World Champion. Only a ball and a stick are used in playing field hockey. The stick has a curved head and is rounded on one side and flat on the other. It is made out of hardwood and has a weight ...
