Field Hockey

Field hockey is a popular modern sport; it is also one of the oldest of competitive sports.  Although nobody know for sure the exact beginnings of the game, there is evidence that Egyptians played it over 4,000 years ago.  We also know that the Greeks, Romans, Ethiopians, and Aztecs played variations of the game.  These games evolved into the modern game of field hockey in England, during the mid-1800’s.  In 1849, the first men’s hockey club was formed, which led to the establishment of the Hockey Association in 1886.  Since the British Empire was so expansive, the game spread quickly.  Starting in 1895, international competitions were played Great Britain and its colonies.
