     In the essay "And We Are Not Married" Patricia Williams argues that black people or actually white peoples ideas of black people are socially constructed and that white people are willing to go to great lengths to change the traditional construction and provide equality for black people but in effect they are really just changing the face of racism.
     She begins by illustrating some examples of this. On May 28, Patricia Williams went to a conference on dealing with black issues.  While at this conference someone made a comment about black people not being socially constructed and that reminded her of an incident that occurred at a Benetton's store in New York City.  In Manhattan some merchants use a buzzer system to allow customers and shoppers entry.  If you don't come across as "desirable" to the shop clerk then you are denied entry.  This is what happened when she went to buy a sweater for her mother for Christmas.
     She got very angry with the clerk but instead of reacting violently, she went home and typed up her account of what had happened.  Acting within the rights of the First Amendment,
she proceeded to attach this story which she had decorated to the window at the Benetton's store. She affixed the poster in such a way as not to do any damage whatsoever to the store.  She call's this expression of racial injustice "guerrilla writing."
     The next time she told this story was at a symposium on "excluded voices" where she was asked to submit an article to be printed in a law review.  She wrote again about the experience at Benetton's but this time in much greater detail and more emotion.
     When she received it back after the first edit much of the emotion had been edited out leaving only "simple declarative statements."  What was once a very personal essay had become very impersonal.
     A week and a half later she received back the second edit.  This time all reference to Benetton's had been edited out.  The editors were afraid that they could be sued as this story could not be proven.  Ms. Williams offered to supply a footnote relieving the publisher of any liability but the request was refused.
