1.     Few people have impacted American literature quite as much as Carl Sandburg. From his dramatic and though-provoking poems to his insightful biography on Abraham Lincoln, he will be forever remembered and honored in America as well as the world.

B.     Thesis Statement
1.     As one of the most profound and articulate literary figures in American history, Carl Sandburg had a huge impact on American society that is still felt today. Two major themes dominated Carl Sandburg’s works. One is a search for the meaning of American history, and the other is his passion for the common American man. His experiences in life attributes to his unique style of poetry, and led to his critically acclaimed biography of Abraham Lincoln..

II.     Chicago Poems
A. Reason for writing this book
1. He wrote this book because he lived in this city for the longest time. He experienced everything in this city and he loved it. He said that Chicago was a city with culture beyond any other place. He said that this place was quiet yet it was screaming with life. He loved this city so much he was influenced to write a whole book of poems on it.

B. What the book focuses on
1. This book mainly focuses on the slums of Chicago. How the people of Chicago lived such simple, yet still fun lives. It talks about the interesting people who lived in Chicago and the exciting sites to see. Also about how there are things in Chicago you can’t see in any other place besides Chicago itself. The people in Chicago make Chicago what it is.

C. What the critics say
1. They loved this book because they say that every poem inside Chicago Poems had meaning. The critics say that he expressed Chicago as a place where things were happening yet still quiet. No one will ever be able to reproduce what Carl Sandburg wrote about the city of Chicago.

III.     Slabs of the Sunburnt West
     A.     Reason why he wrote this book
1. He wrote this book to show people what the old west was like and what the people went through during the old west times. Also because the world was so different as in technology wise Carl Sandburg wanted to make sure people didn’t forget the old times. He showed people how beautiful the old west was by writing about it. He wrote about everything to sunrise to sunset.

B.       What the book focuses on
1. It focuses on the beauty of the old west. It talks about the animals that used to roam around freely. And how people lived on there own and there was no one would be able ...
