two brothers, Darry and SodaPop. He is interested in academics and movies, and hates the fact that he doesn’t receive the same respect given to the wealthier kids, who belong to a different group called the Socialites, or Socs. Pony has long, greasy hair, which is the stereotypical view of “the greasers”; he knows that people consider him a juvenile delinquent and a hood based on his appearance. The greasers are made up of seven members, PonyBoy, SodaPop, Darry, Two-bit, Steve, Dally and Johnny. Pony is not content with his situation; he worries that his brother, Darry, does not want to take care of him and constantly fears being jumped by the Socs as has happened to him at the start after leaving a movie theatre by himself. Dally, Pony, Johnny and Two-Bit all go to a drive-in theatre and meet two Soc girls that have left their boyfriends because they just want to go drink. Dally talks dirty to them and, to his surprise, Johnny tells him to lay off. He does because Johnny is the group “pet” because he got jumped by five Socs and has a big scar on his face. Pony, and one of the Soc girls go to the concession stand for some popcorn, and he tells her what the Socs did to Johnny. She says not all Socs are like that and Pony says that not all greasers are bad. Things get much worse when he and his friend Johnny go to a park late at night. The Socs attack them there and try to drown Pony in a fountain. When he gains consciousness, he realizes that one of the Socs, Bob, is dead, and that Johnny had killed him.
