English 102-30 February 22, 1999 You Took the Words Right Out Of My Mouth Have you ever read or heard a quotation that you couldn't get out of your mind? Maybe you were at a seminar on "The key to a happy life", or you were at a family reunion where Uncle Jimmy was telling an old Vietnam story. Maybe you were reading a good book about the early philosophers. Whatever you may have been doing, you probably were not looking for an outstanding quote to memorize and keep with you the rest of your life. So sometime during Dr. Know's allocution on how you should live your life, or uncle Jimmy's annoying voice, or while you were learning about Plato and his views on the truth, something accidentally caught your attention. It could have been as simple as five words or as complex as five lines. What was it about these quotes that made you want to remember them? According to Southern Illinois University students in Carbondale, the five best quotes were based upon the following criteria. How well the quote related to one's life, how interesting the topic of the quote, whether it was thought provoking, how short the quote, and how clear it was. The first quote, "Punctuality is the virtue of the bored", is quite humorous. It is clear and short, but it is a lot more humorous once you look inside. Evelyn Waugh is saying that moral principles on being on time are only because one has nothing else better to do. In which case, if everyone were always busy and preoccupied with interesting lives, no one would be on time anywhere. Punctuality is such an interesting topic among young adults, especially college students, because so many lack it. Johnson 2 This short quote makes you think about something you already knew but never really thought about before. "When you know a thing, to hold that you know it, and when you don't know a thing, to allow that you do not know it: this is knowledge." The main reason students chose this quote as one of the five best was meaning. Confucius was saying that to truly be knowledgeable one must not only be able to know a few things, but also be humble enough to recognize and acknowledge what you do not know. This quote may have a different way of being worded, but the meaning is quite clear. It makes you think about all of the people you hold in high respects because o...
