Physical Science 2-28-99 Purpose: To determine which of the two acids is stronger by adding a base to an acid until it neutralizes, then determine what the unkown is. Background Information: To do this lab, you need to know what most of the words mean. An acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions in a solution, to identify an acid the pH is under 7. A base is a substance that produses hydroxide ions in a solution, and to identify an base the pH level needs to be over 7. A pH measure of hydronium ion concentration in a water solution; it is measured between 0-14. The way you tell neutralization occurs when the indicator turns a different color and stays that same color. Procedure: 1) Get a test tube and place five drops of acid in it. 2) Take the test tube and ask the teacher carefull to put one drop of phenolphthalein. 3) Take the NaOH bottle and place drops in the acidic test tube until the color completely changes. 4) To figure out the point of acid becoming neutral, take the number of what you got when it and subtract one. 5) Record the results on the data table. 6) Drain out your acid in the sink and clean the test tubes. 7) Follow all steps again until all of the tests are done twice. Hypothesis: I believe the H2SO4 will be a stron acid. At the end of this lab, I believe I will be able to tell the unknown because it would be close or it will for sure take the same amount of drops as H2SO4 or HCL. Data: 1st 2nd Ave. drop HCI 3 3 3 H2SO4 26 24 25 Unkown #2 49 47 48 Data Analysis: 90 80 70 # of 60 drops 50 40 30 ... This is not the end of the termpaper!
