Social History
In the colony of Pennsylvania were located many diverse ethnic groups, but only three main ones. These were the English, who settled in the east, the Scotch-Irish, who settled in the west, and the Germans, who settled in between the two. William Penn had promised religious toleration and participation in lawmaking to anyone who wished to settle there. In response to his advertisements, many English, Welsh, and Dutch Quakers quickly migrated to the colony. They settled much of the area within 40 km of modern day Philadelphia. This was in the period from 1682 to the 1700’s. Early in the 1700’s a large influx of Germans arrived, many of them members of such persecuted religious groups as the Amish, Mennonites, and Schwenkfeldians, followers of Kaspar Schwenkfeld von Ossig, a dissident 16th-century theologian. This group of people settled between the Blue Mountains and Philadelphia. (a off topic but interesting fact arises here. The area the Germans settled is now known as the Pennsylvania Dutch country. These people weren’t Dutch, though! So how did this come about? Somewhere along the line, the German’s word for themselves, Deutsche, was accidentally written as Dutch!) Starting around 1718 there was a sudden influx of Scotch-Irish. They settled in the mountains west of the Germans. These were only the main groups, though. Many people from bordering colonies moved into surrounding areas, which were later given to Pennsylvania. In 1700, the colony had around 20,000 inhabitants, and by 1776 there were 300,000! In the way of agriculture, Pennsylvania mainly produced dairy products, poultry, cattle, nursery stock, mushrooms, hogs, and hay. This required much labor, and in Pennsylvania, hands were scarce, so slaves were then brought in. Since William Penn usually bought extra land from the Native Americans, they were on fairly good terms, and so as not to throw them into a war, they had to import Africans. This began around the 1660’s in Colonial America. Most slaves came from eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. The importation continued until about 1720.
