Social History
In the colony of Pennsylvania were located many diverse ethnic groups, but only three main ones. These were the English, who settled in the east, the Scotch-Irish, who settled in the west, and the Germans, who settled in between the two. William Penn had promised religious toleration and participation in lawmaking to anyone who wished to settle there. In response to his advertisements, many English, Welsh, and Dutch Quakers quickly migrated to the colony. They settled much of the area within 40 km of modern day Philadelphia. This required much labor, and in Pennsylvania, hands were scarce, so slaves were then brought in. Since William Penn usually bought extra land from the Native Americans, they were on fairly good terms, and so as not to throw them into a war, they had to import Africans. This began around the 1660’s in Colonial America. Most slaves came from eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. The importation continued until about 1720. By 1765, most slaves had been born in the colony, and by that they became the first African...This is not the end of the termpaper! Register below to see the complete version of this term paper.
