ART 110 reflection on sculptures
“The Kiss” is basically a stone based sculpture-describing couples in love.  “The Kiss” has six versions; each of them is made in different times.  They were made in the years of 1907, 1911, 1912, 1915, 1921, and 1957.  But every one of them kept the similar, or almost identical look.  All 6 versions are one mal and female holding each other with their arms.  The sculpture itself is very compacted; we can identify the male and the female by looking at the hair strands on the side of the sculpture.  Brancusi used the solid quality of stones to express the everlasting love; he also used one big stone to show how two can become one.  The reason why he chose to have those square corners instead of the traditional natural way is that he wants to have a different feeling.  Brancusi wanted something fresh and he wanted to express the “idea” of love, not the “feelings” of love.  When Brancusi was working on this project, he seemed to have made couple other works that are as compact as “The Kiss.”  Most of these works were done in one-piece just like “The Kiss;” which means two become one.  In “The Kiss,” the arms wrapped around each other, and a line in the middle breaks the one-piece stone.  The eyes of each side stares at each other and absolutely gave out the spirit of love.  Brancusi practice simplicity; in his works you can see how he uses the most powerful and yet, simple way to express an idea in a single project.  The sculpture of Brancusi presents very straight out idea about what he is trying to say to the people.  He would form a simple sense in his work and sent it out on everyone who sees his work.  The major difference between Brancusi and the other artists is that Brancusi is very spiritual.  Take “The Kiss” for example; Brancusi chose an ordinary, square stone, with hours of work with it.  “The Kiss” was born and it is full of idea of love.  On the other hand, many artists might just try to create something close to realism, somehow natural cravings.  Those cravings will give you feelings towards the topic of the sculpture, but I don’t think the expression will as deep as the ideas that Brancusi’s works brings you.
The work of Brancusi is very easy to divide into two phases: the student and early works up the “Stanescu monument; and the mature period beginning at 1907.  The later works of Brancusi reflects the thematic concerns and basic sensibility of the earlier.  The mature phase seems to present an unw...
