AIDS
AIDS  is  a  terrible  autoimmune  disease  that  is  the  leading  killer  of  all

Americans  ages  25 to 44.  To  understand  the AIDS  virus  we  must  research  it.

That’s  why  this  research  paper  will  focus  on  the  medical,  emotional,  and  economic

aspects of  AIDS.

There  are  various  acquired  immunodeficiencies.  Currently,  however,  the  most

devastating  of  the  acquired  immunodeficiencies  is  acquired  immune  deficiency

syndrome  (AIDS),  which  cripples  the  immune  system  by  interfering  with  the

activity  of  helper  T  cells  (Marieb  790).  AIDS  is  caused  by  a  virus  called  the

human  immunodieficiency  virus  (HIV).  The  AIDS  virus  attacks  the  body’s  immune

system  and  causes  it  to  lose  it’s  ability  to  fight  off  certain  infections  and  diseases,

eventually  causing  death.  AIDS  is  diagnosed  when  opportunistic  diseases  appear.

Some  of  the  most  common  opportunistic  diseases  include  a  rare  type  of  pneumonia

called  pneumocystis  carini  pneumonia,  and  slow  growing  cancer  called  kaposis

sarcoma.  During  the  asymptomatic  time,  the  infected  person  can  transmit  the  virus

to  another  individual  with  whom  they  exchange  sexual  secretions,  blood,  or  blood

product.  After  the  initial  asymptomatic  period,  many  individuals  develop  AIDS

related  complex  (ARC).  Signs  and  symptoms  of  ARC  include:  a  positive  blood  test

for  antibodies  to  the  HIV  virus,  lack  of  resistance  to  infection,  lost  of  appetite,

weight  loss,  recurrent  fevers,  night  sweats,  skin  rashes,  diarrhea,  fatigue,  and

swollen  lympnodes.  The  AIDS  virus  is  spread  through  sexual  secretions,  blood,  and

Walker 2

from  an  infected  mother  to  her  infant  during  pregnancy  of  child  birth.  The  AIDS

virus  does  not  live  long  outside  the  body  and  is  not  transmitted  by  casual,

non-sexual  contact.  Condoms  should  be  used  when  protecting  yourself  from  AIDS

during  sexual  activity.  Prevention  is  the  best  method  when  dealing  with  AIDS.

High  risk  sexual  activity  such  as  multiple  partners  and  homosexual  activities,  also

sharing  IV  needles  for  drugs  should  be  avoided  (Simmers  98).  Some  drugs  that

are  used  to  treat  aids  are:  DDI,  DDC,  D4T,  3TC,  and  protiase  inhituitors  such  as

saquinauir  and  ritonauir  (Mariab  ...
