James Thurber: Man of Humor

     Has anyone ever heard of James Thurber?  Does anyone know where he comes from?  Did he have any siblings, or did he have a good family life?  All these questions and more will be answered in this report.
     James Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 8, 1884.  Thurber had two brothers. One was older, and one was younger.  His older brother was named William and his younger brother was named Robert.  His father was a politician but was never elected into office.   When James was six one of his brothers shot him in the eye with an arrow, he lost sight in his left eye.  In his younger days, James went to public school in Columbus, and later on James attended school at Ohio State in 1913.
     At the end of WWI he began serving as a code clerk in the U.S. State office. In later years he served at the American embassy in Paris.  He ended that job and returned to Columbus in 1920 to report for the city’s newspaper
The Dispatch.  After that job he began to write funny sketches for the New York Sunday World in 1925.  When Thurber quit that job he became a writer on certain sections in the paper answering people’s letter and replying to then in the paper.  James then began to write a series of books.
     Many of Thurber’s books were based on things he wrote in the magazine, The New Yorker.  He also wrote an Off Broadway play, called The Male Animal.  It was presented on Broadway in 1940 and again in 1952.  Many movies were made from his stories as well.  Some of the popular movies were The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Rise and Shine, and many more popular titles. In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Thurber describes a man who finds ease from his nagging wife by constantly daydreaming.  Thurber is also known for his drawings.  His drawings were first published in one of his books Is Sex Necessary.  Many of his illustrations were published after this book as well.
     Thurber received his honorary Lit. D. degree from Kenyon College in 1950.  He also received another honorary Lit. D. degree from Yale University in 1953.  Thurber married a woman named Althea Adams on May 20, 1922.  They had one daughter Rose Mary.  Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t last long. After his divorce he married Helen Wismer on June 25, 1935.  During this marriage Thurber began to go downhill. He developed a cataract in his good eye.  ...
