Imagine a world full of hate and devoid of love for anything except the government. Imagine a world where the government controls all aspects of humanity, including the past. This is the world George Orwell depicts in his novel 1984. In 1984 Big Brother and The Party control every aspect of the lives of the citizens of Oceania. Winston Smith, a citizen of Oceania, is a secret enemy of this government. He rebels against The Party in several ways, among which is his affair with Julia, a young member of the Anti-Sex League who Winston eventually finds also supports his cause. The relationship between love and hate is continuously depicted throughout this novel. We see this relationship clash a number of times in 1984. First is Winston’s relationship with Julia with whom he falls deeply in love after only a short time mainly for his desperate need for someone to support his beliefs. Second is Winston’s fatal attraction to a man named O’Brien. Winston believes O’Brien to be a lead member in a group known as the Brotherhood who oppose Big Brother and The Party. This attraction eventually leads to the capture of Winston and Julia. The third occurs, ironically, within the depths of the Ministry of Love. He is subjugated physically, emotionally and mentally. Winston comes to love O’Brien and revere him as a savior for O’Brien issues the torture and thus controls the pain. Fourth is the shocking end to Winston’s life. Following his release back into society Winston is no longer capable of disloyalty to The Party. He no longer has thoughts of his own, save those that The Party has implanted within his mind. At the climax of the story Winston is brought back to the Ministry of Love. Here Winston realizes, as the bullet enters his brain and a single tear runs down his face, that he truly does love Big Brother. Orwell incorporates many themes into 1984. Above all would be the controlling government’s control over humanity and the past. In 1984 The Party has the ability to control all thought and emotion within society thus controlling humanity. It accomplishes this by controlling the past, present, and future. The Party controls all media and records known to mankind. With this the party is able to erase and fabricate any information that they wish. With this power The Party controls all thought and feeling that enters our exits the minds of the society that they reign over. 1984 comes to a climax at the point of O’Brien’s betrayal of Winst...
