It’s lines like the above that release the real thought and social conscious in hip music. It’s no longer just making words rhyme. It’s making people think. Hip hop has come a long way since The Sugarhill Gang and Furious Five. It’s not just music anymore, it’s life.
Hip hop really just started in the late 70’s when "spinners"(party deejays) would try to hype(excite) the crowd by repeating the breakdown of the record the were playing and make short songs that would rhyme at the end of every sentence. Usually the would boost and brag of how great they were(note: a common rhyme would involve "I’m the best…, better than the rest…. You get it.) But rap really wasn’t consider a talent until the music started to breakout of it’s party sense to talk about things that effected their everyday lives.
For a few years hip hop seemed to fizzle away from urban culture. But then about 1985-86 such groups as Run DMC and solo act LL Cool J ( which stands for " Ladies Love Cool James) emerged bringing a new face to hip hop altogether. With a tougher than leather image, the opposite of spinners, and were quickly embraced by the urban public. Very soon after a fashion trend of warm-up suits, Kangol hats, and unlaced Adidas spread across the east coast( big up to Brooklyn, Hollis, Queensbridge, Marcy, and Harlem world as the most influential areas around hip hop). And all this time there was nothing for the West coast to support or call their own. This is what sparked the yearn for "gangsta rap".
N.W.A. .That name is synonymous with violence, drugs, and the infamous life in cities such Los Angeles, Watts, and the worst of all Compton. Young, ruthless, and unable to be contained N.W.A.( which stands for N!**@$ With Attitudes) was one of the most influential and most hated groups all at the same time. Boasting of murders, drug use, and sex the main public quickly turned them away, banning the music and refusing to give airplay to some of their videos. In fact it was until the early part of March 99 that their video "Straight Outta Compton" was played on MTV. But even though they were perceived as vulgar hoodlums they seemed to make songs that spoke of free thought and individuality.
