Make way for Japanese Animation!  From the past of another country comes a wave of animation attracting people of all ages.  Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, Pokemon are just a few examples of now famous animations in America.  Hello Kitty, Pochacco, and Bad Badtz Maru may not be in the same category, but they are also Japanese animation.  Would you believe that many of these animations some Japanese and others have known since we were in elementary school?  They have grown up with these characters, but not in the same way children are today.
     My roommate, Brandy Kalahiki, from my freshman year lived thirteen years in Japan on a military base with most of those years having no clue what cable television was like.  Up until about two years ago military members were given only one American channel and several Japanese channels to watch.  With nothing better to do he often found herself flipping through the Japanese channels.  “I may not have understood what was being said, but the variety was greatly appreciated.  In a way those shows were a lot more interesting.  Instead of having the story told to my friends and I, we would make the story up ourselves,” she stated. Now a day there’s no need for that.
     Believe it or not but these animations are not new.  Almost all are old shows or characters that have been shown in Japan time and time again.  The shows have just been translated from the Japanese language to the American language.  Dragonball Z for an example, was the most popular show to watch every Wednesday night while she was in Middle School. It was the cool thing to watch it and come to school the next day talking about what they had seen happen on the show.  “We couldn’t understand a damn word,” she stated a bit frustrated. “but if you watched the show you were able to figure out a few things.  You were able to figure out the names of the characters and what was going on with each character.  Saying that I mean you could figure out the evil guy, the hero, and everything else that goes a long with it.”
  What is it about these old shows that catch the interest of the viewers?  Maybe it’s their use of outrageous characters, flashy elements, and creative style.
           “It appears that the Japanese have a certain idea of what American traits should be, and they superimpose them in each character, so it turns out that they all resemble each other.”—Tanya Napold, FSU student.
