Essay One 7/26/99 Andrew Jakubowitch Violence in Our Schools The problem of violence in schools, like the related problem of violence in society, has become one of the most pressing educational issues in the United States. Public outcry for the need to rectify violence in schools has turned many heads. The increase in the number of violent incidences has led to many strategies for ensuring the safety of children in school(Teacher Talk). However, many proposed solutions to this problem are not unlike many of those used to curtail crime in society(NCES). Some of these proposed strategies include: the installation of metal detectors at school (Teach Talk); the enactment of "zero tolerance" policies. These policies guarantee the automatic removal of students who commit any acts considered violent (Teacher Talk); and the use of police officers and security guards to patrol and monitor student behavior while school is in session. There are other, less extreme strategies that have been introduced as well, to reduce the incidence of violence in schools. Programs are being implemented to teach children to resolve conflicts without violence. Also, mentoring programs have been implemented so that students can talk to adults about problems in school.(Teacher Talk) Finally, a variety of counseling programs have been implemented by establishing partnerships between schools and social service agencies, which provide direct services to students regarding issues pertaining to violence(NCES). The U.S. Department of Education reports that schools which have effectively implemented models for classroom and behavior management practices have greatly reduced need for interventions(Teacher Talk). Though some of these less extreme strategies for reducing violence have proven successful in some schools, the overall momentum of school policy has been towards the "get tough" approach.(Teacher Talk) In response to the pervasive fear of violence among parents and students, politicians and school officials have pledged to quell the tide of violence by converting schools into "lock-down" facilities, and by cracking down on offenders by increasing the penalties incurred upon those apprehended for committing acts of violence.(Teacher Talk) Yet, despite the tough talk there appears to be little reason for optimism given the track record of these kinds of methods.(NCES) Like most people, I too would like to see a reduction in violence.
