Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, is the story of a young man in search of a teacher.  However, the teacher he finds is a gorilla named Ishmael who can communicate telepathically.  In being a member of a different species other than humans, Ishmael has a unique perspective on the history of man as well as man's role in the universe.  Many of the earth's people are aware of the environmental problems the world faces.  Even more so are humans aware of why the world in such danger.  It is evident that throughout history man as often acted before he thought, forcing his views of what is supposably "right" onto others.  In essence, mankinds "modern" society are ". . . captives of a civilizational system that more or less compels you to go on destroying the world in order to live"(25).
     The theme of captivity is one of the fascinating topics dealing with the various aspects of the human condition.  With this topic comes some vocabulary.  "Takers" are people that are called "civilized".  "Leavers" are people that are called "primitive".  "Story" is an interrelation between the gods, man, and the earth, with all stories having a beginning, middle, and end.  "Culture" is defined as the people enacting the story.
     Takers are all prisoners of a giant jail whose main purpose is not so much to serve a debt to society but to consume the world.  Chapter 1:6 in Ishmael that no one wants to specifically destroy the world(25).  But man goes on everyday, afraid to change the way society works because it might sacrifice some luxuries or help the Leavers.  It is all in capital interests and the world's people...
