                                         "The  Guilt  of  Sin"
The Scarlet Letter                         In the book, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne the setting is in the 1600's in Boston.  The town is set in a Puritan society where religion is life.  The story deals with the sin of adultery and the two perpetrators of this sin.  The two adulterers, Hester Prynne and the Reverend  Arthur Dimmsdale, deal with their sin very differently and the way they pursue their forgiveness dictates their actions in their everyday life.
Hester Prynne, a married woman, who presumes her husband dead after two years of uncommunicated absence, commits this crime and is found guilty of adultery when she was impregnated without the presence of her assumed dead husband.  The crime is usually punished by death, but because of Hester's unusual circumstances she was made to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her breast for the rest of her natural life.  Hester is forced to deal with sin by the means of public humiliation, whether it be going into the market or attending church, she must always put up with the sin upon the bosom which all the townspeople could lay their eyes upon.  The letter of sin is open for all the people to look at and then be reminded of the deed that took place.  "She will be a living omen to all who gaze upon the scarlet letter." said Roger Chillingworth, an old alchemist in the story.  Hester also has to handle what is called "...the Scarlet Letter endowed with life...," or her daughter, Pearl.  Pearl is the child of sin who came out of this affair between these two adulterers.  Hester has to raise her child of sin everyday and answer Pearl's constant questions of the scarlet letter which is embroidered on her mother's dress.  These things she has to put up with everyday becomes her punishment and thus gives her the forgiveness that she feels was necessary for her to live and go on with her life.  After, she feels this weight of sin lifted somewhat off her back, Hester becomes very helpful throughout the town and the "A"  becomes known as "Able" instead "adulteress."  So, since this town has time to forgive the sin of Hester, she can go and lead a semi-normal life.
