Perfume Sea

"The Perfume Sea" is set in a beauty parlor in a West African Country just before and after the nation gains its political independence from British Colonial rule.  It deals with a hair dresser, Mr. Archipelago, who coiffeurs the hair for brittish ladies who are in this colony, but when Great Britain declares this a free colony all the british ladies return to England and leave Mr. Archipelago with little business.  Mr. Archipelago and his assistant Doree decide that to keep their business afloat and to be able to support themselves, they must change with the times.   "The Perfume Sea" is a short story that deals with the theme of adapting and changing with the times to survive.  It also deals with the theme of taking control of life, and not leaving things to happen randomly, or else there will be unexpected and unavoidable change that will force you to take control in life.  Another theme that is shown is that if you change with the times you can control your life.  The story depicts and relates many of the themes to the sea using vivid nautical images and nautical expressions and nautical terms.
