Mr. Owens English 102 Project Proposal REINTRODUCTION OF WOLVES INTO YELLOWSTONE In the recent past, the conservation of many types of animals has been generally supported. The general public, especially when not directly affected by the issue, tends to agree that animal species need to be preserved if they are in danger of extinction. In contrast, however, the story of the wolves and Yellowstone Park is a tale of heated controversy. Although there are several organizations and individuals fighting to protect and expand the endangered wolves’ territory, there seems to be an almost equal number fighting to keep the wolf out of its original homeland. Those opposed to the reintroduction of the wolves are largely livestock farmers and other inhabitants of the Yellowstone Park area. They say that the wolf would only hurt the current, wild animal population by throwing it off balance; however, in reality these opponents to the wolves are more interested in not having to take precautions to protect their own livestock. Due to this opposition, wildlife conservationists have to work extremely hard. First, they are working to maintain the gains they have made. Second of all, they are trying to advance these successes so that they may establish a strong foothold for the wolf in parks such as Yellowstone. This research paper will address the topic of the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone. As its own case, this study is important because of the wolves, the other animals, the people directly involved, and the ecological system as a whole. Furthermore, such a topic is important as an example of the nature of the debate over any type of conservation—for plant or animal species. The issue of reintroduction for wolves in Yellowstone has characteristics similar to other conservation issues. One example of the literature that will be reviewed is the book, The Return of the Wolf to Yellowstone. In The Return of the Wolf to Yellowstone, author Thomas McNamee goes into great depth investigating both positive and negative aspects of the wolf in Yellowstone. He uses both personal experience and research to develop and share an educated position on the issue of reintroduction. Furthermore, he provides an unbiased view because he not only supports the reintroduction of wolves, but is also a cattle rancher (McNamee 15). Holt stands on both sides and this position allows him to be especially fair on this matter. Another source that will aid in factuall... This is not the end of the termpaper!
