     Sometimes imagination can get out of control, and sometimes peer pressure can lead people do make unwise decisions.  In "The Beard" written by Fred Chappell, the imagination and peer pressure are two elements responsible for determining the reactions and actions of Joe Robert and his son Jess.  Some of these reactions are exagerrated and not in reality what they seem to be and some of the son's actions are a result of the temptation his father puts before him.  Imagination can control man's rational thoughts and sometimes temptations by those one looks up to can lead one to make irresponsible decisions.
     Peer pressure leads Jess to follow along with his father's ill advised plot.  Knowing not all of his father's idea's to discover the mystery of his mystrious uncle's behavior are proper,  Jess decides to join his father in a invasion of his uncle's privacy.  This is done to solve the mysteries they have been so curious about for years.  Joe Robert uses many unlawful actions to satisfy his own needs and tempts his son into joining him.  One mystery Joe Robert is so curious of solving is the way the uncle disappears at

dinner time without making a noise or leaving a clue.  Joe Robert states, "I'm going to get me a moving picture camera" (Chappell, ).  This act stated by Joe Robert shows just how determined Joe is to figure the mysterious uncle out.  Due to Jess’ curiosity of the mysterious disappearances, Jess goes along with his father’s plan, although he knows it is wrong to invade one’s habits.  Joe Robert is plotting to video tape his uncle to solve the mystery of the uncle's mysterious disappearances. Feasting their eyes on the uncle, the mysterious man disappears into thin air.  Joe Robert states, "No, a movie camera wouldn't capture it... it would take some kind of invention that is beyond the capacity of present day science" (Chappell, ).  Realizing there is no way to discover the mystery of the uncle's mysterious disappearances, the father turns to another evil attempt to answer another wonder of his curiosities about the mysterious uncle, his beard.  Joe and Jess both wondered about the beard for years, without ever viewing it.  Jess states, “How long do you think it is?  It was the thousandth time I had asked the question” ...
