3-24-99 Mr. Middleton English 250 Some Comments on Justice and Order In order to administer justice and maintain order in a society, one must know the very meaning of justice and how it is to be applied to society. This must be done because justice can be interpreted in many different ways. This is why laws have to be worded very carefully. If they were not, a judge could misinterpret the law and justice would not be rightfully done. Justice is the process of applying society’s laws and accepted values to hear both sides of a case and then, those in authority must decide if there has been a wrongdoing and who committed the malicious act. There are several different important issues that Lon L. Fuller and Jonathan Swift discuss in their respective essays. I would like to discuss three of those ideas today. The first of these, being abnormal/normal behavior. In “A Modest Proposal”, Swift discusses a very disgusting way to control the population of Ireland. The way he does it, is a literary device called a satire. According to Bookshelf 98, Satire is defined as “a literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit.”(1). Swift says that a good way to control the growth in Ireland would be to eat the children at the age of one year. The meat would be very good and tender then and it would be profitable for the poor(2). The point I would like to make is that this would be very abnormal behavior. It wouldn’t be accepted in today’s society. I believe that Swift was thinking quite abnormally when he wrote this, because that is not considered normal by modern society. I have read satires before and none of them were this disgusting, even though they still achieved their objective. However, I also believe that Swift wrote it like that because he was disgusted at the way the government was treating the people and he wanted to make sure that he got his point across. Swift wrote an abnormal essay to make sure a normal society knew what he was trying to say. The second issue I would like to discuss, is that of capital punishment. This particularly applies to the defendants in “The Case of the Speluncean Explorers”, by Lon L. Fuller. I, for one, believe in capital punishment. I believe that those who would commit those acts that warrant such treatment and do so of their own free will, should get what they deserve because people like that have no place in society. However, I do not believe ... This is not the end of the termpaper! Register below to see the complete version of this term paper.
