1.1949-1953Marhsal and colleagues several charges against schools such as Del, SC, VA, Dis of Col and KA.  Kansas filed by NAACP on behalf of Brown.  His eight-year-old daughter Linda had to travel several miles to segregated public school everyday eventhough she lived next to a school.  May 17 1954 court said, "We conclude that in the field of pub ed the doctrine of sep but equal has no place.  Sep ed facilities are inherently unequal…Any lang in Pleesy vs.Fury contrary to these findings is rejected."BrownII" 1955.  Said that NAACP was wrong and deseg should be gradual. Massive resistance occurred which is pain and suffering to deseg schools.  Launched a battle between fed and state and local governments.  
2.Legacy of WW2-blacks worked in war plants and fought in battle so why do we have inequality.  Move from farms to southern cities and escaped rural life and control by white farm owners.  Strong infrastructure-urban churches, community organizations, social and professional groups.  Growth of black middle class.  Whites saw injustices and how can we have democracy with these.
4.Great Society-reform program. Healthcare-Medicare-made it available to all elderly Americans regardless of need. Can go to private physicians just charged to govt. Medicaid-extended federal medical assistance to welfare recipients of all ages. War on Poverty-Office of Economic OppurtunityOEO- created new educational, employment, housing, and healthcare programs.  Community Action effort to involve poor people in the design of the programs that helped them.  Revitalizing American Cities and Schools-Department of Housing and Urban Development led by Weaver-new cabinet agency. Model cities program-offered federal subsidies for urban development. Immigration Act of 1965 only allowed 170000 a year but from anywhere not just preferencing Europe. The impact of the great society reflected a new awareness of social problems in America and also the influence of Kennedy.  They found that it was possible to create a Great Society through purposeful public action.  Whether because of economic growth or because of govt anti poverty efforts the decade of the 60's saw the most substantial decrease in poverty that this nation has ever seen.
5.CR mvmt-wobbled 65-66  many riots like Harlem and Watts 34 dead.  67- eight major riots.  They got the 65 act but failed to go in the direction that hey wanted they want no segregation at all but they are still reciving it in some places.  Bo...
