     Yoga, to us in the West, has come to mean partaking in a series of exercises and meditation. In actuality, these postures, or asanas, is only one step in the eight-step path of Patanjali (Asthanga yoga). Yoga is more than physical exercise. It is a belief. The term yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yug’ meaning union. There are various forms of yoga, but all share the same goal – unification with the Divine. Including Asthanga, there are four paths to unification a yogi can take. Bhakti yoga is the path of devotion – whenever we think of God, God thinks more of us. Jnana yoga is the path of knowledge – in understanding the transcendental truth, a yogi sees meaning rather than physical images. However, the path that would most benefit those of us who are “blind” to yoga’s meaning would be the path of selfless action, or karma yoga. Given the huge egos of the Western world, karma yoga would be the best path for us to walk on.
     In choosing to follow the path of selfless action, we must eliminate the thought of purpose in whatever activities we do. Whatever we do is no longer done for our own satisfaction but for the notion that we are now God’s instruments in carrying out his desires. As his instruments, we get closer and closer to him. A human being’s sense of purpose is done through his actions. In order to follow the path as a karma yogi, we allow ourselves to continue our actions but not the purpose. The only purpose carried out is that of God. For example, I would continue working as I normally do. However, my purpose is no longer to make money. In fact, I would have no purpo...
