Rebecca Clarke Rebecca Clarke was born in 1886 in Harrow, England. She first studied music at her parents home. She then moved on to study viola and composition at London's Royal College of Music. However, she withdrew from the College because her father insisted so. Because she didn't have the best home life she turned to composing as an outlet for her emotions at the time. Even though her father was skeptical of her composing he still sent some of her music to Sir Charles Stanford who was a teacher of British Composers in the 20th Century. Stanford then wrote back saying that he didn't think that her writing was of not of any "particular significance." However, he did undertake her education for that he was struck by her "poetic feeling and independence of idea." Rebecca or Beccle as she was known within her family circle, then studied under the supervision of Stanford at the Royal College from 1907 until 1910.
