         Swirls of dust circled over the dry, scorched plain and the bleat of sheep sounded loud into the hot silence, protesting against the heat of the sun. The woman shut the rusty gate behind the last animal and fastened the tie. Frowning, she wiped at the sweat that was pouring from her creased brow. Her agitation and weariness combined with the suffocating heat was disturbing the tiny life within her, and she felt it move in annoyance. The sky was beginning to darken, clouds appeared to be gathering and she prayed with all her might that a storm was coming. Although she had never felt any inclination towards religion, she figured that if there was ever going to be a time that would require praying or help from above, now was it. Slowly she recounted the sheep and with heavy disappointment realised that yet another was missing. The man was not going to be happy.
         Since his departure three weeks’ earlier, it had become an increasingly common event for her to discover that an animal or two was missing. Sometimes she found the remains, but she actually preferred not to. Blood had never been one of her strong points. Her tired eyes drifted over the sheep and she wondered why the dingoes even bothered, so many of them were on their last legs and it would not be long before their bony and sickly carcasses fed the flies that hungrily buzzed over them…waiting.
         She dusted her hands on her skirt and turned back towards the hut. She did not like to leave her little one alone for very long. At the age of two, young Billy had developed a proclivity to explore, to wander off in all directions, eager to discover the vast and exciting world around him. The woman herself shared no similar passion for her rugged and harsh surroundings. A towner’s life had always seemed to her as an idyllic existence. But poverty and a plain appearance had acted as a deterrent towards wealthy gentleman and thus thwarted her childhood dreams. In their place were sick sheep, never ending heat and constant isolation. She deeply envied those people who lived within the comfort of the town. She wished for the company of friends and neighbours, and the safety of having people nearby.
