William Shakespeare was probably born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-on-Avon.  He was baptized three days later.  His father, John Shakespeare, was a trader in agricultural produce and a glovemaker.  John was a prominent citizen in the town although he was sometimes in debt.  He also may have been a high ranking official in the town such as mayor.  Mary Arden, his mother, was the daughter of a well-to-do farmer from Wilmcote, a nearby village.  She was Roman Catholic and had strong beliefs in her religion.  William was the third of eight children.  William was probably educated at a local grammar school, where he would have studied Latin and Classical Literature.  Some scholars believe he practiced his mother’s religion in secret to avoid persecution during Queen Elizabeth I’s harsh crackdown on Catholics.  However, most other evidence says he was nothing more than an Anglican.  He probably learned a lot from the farms and forests surrounding his house, for his plays suggest he had a good knowledge of hunting.  Actors who came to town probably gave him the enthusiasm for acting and the stage.
In 1582, when he was 18, William married Anne Hathaway, who lived a mile away in the town of Shottery.  She was 26 at the time.  Six months later they had a daughter, Susanna, and in 1585 they had twins, a boy named Hamnet and a girl named Judith.  Shakespeare lost his son in 1596, but Hamnet’s sister and Susanna both lived to be married.
What Shakespeare did between the middle 1580’s and 1592 is unknown, because no records of his activities have been discovered.  It is believed he might have been a soldier, a sailor, a teacher, a law clerk, an actor, or a moneylender.  He may have held several of these occupations at one time.
In 1592, he was most definantly in London; writing plays performed at various theaters at the age of 28.  After an epidemic broke out and closed the theaters, Shakespeare wrote sonnets and poems until the theaters reopened in 1594.  That same year he joined a newly formed drama group called the Lord Chamberland’s Men, serving as writer and actor.  This writing and acting was gaining him a reputation so he started saving earnings in a formidable bank account.  This good fortune he was gaining was because of his wise investing and because he also spent his money wisely.  He also valued his good standing in the community so he and his father applied for and received a coat of arms that elevated his status to “gentlem...
