     Alfred Hitchcock uses continuity editing in Psycho to establish a link between normal reality and an abnormal psychotic state.  With this style of editing Hitchcock is able to make the viewer feel at ease in the beginning of the film.  He then slowly introduces the abnormal side of the movie.  With this editing link, the audience feels more suspense as the dark sides of the characters appear.
     As the film begins, Hitchcock eases in with a clear sense of reality in Marion, the young, attractive secretary who seems relatively normal.  Marion wakes up with her boyfriend. Marion goes to work like usual. Then slowly the link begins, as Marion is trusted with her boss's money. Instead of depositing it, she rushes home to pack and run away.  The quick sequences of Marion packing and driving off make the audience start to feel uneasy.  As Marion is stopped by a police officer and purchases a new car hastily, the audience begins to feel alienated by her erratic actions, yet still feels compassion for the women.
Hitchcock then introduces the character Norman Bates.  Bates runs a small motel Marion stops at and seems fairly normal as well. .  With clever dialogue delivery and subtle uses of camera setup or movements, Hitchcock guided his audience into a shift of sympathies from Marion to Norman.
