Egalitarian Language It is virtually impossible to direct language in a way that will lead us to a more egalitarian society. There are far too many obstacles to overcome. Beyond the ideas of racism or sexism there is also the running debate about religion and the nature of people to always want to win. I believe that we can reach a more tolerant society through teaching and good parenting, however, I do not believe that we could ever have a true egalitarian society. The very idea goes against the competitiveness of human nature. How can everyone be equal if we are striving to be better than others? People do not want to be equal they are always trying to be the best. Even our country promotes this idea in the army recruiting slogan, "Be all that you can be in the army." This is not to say that all people are racist or sexist in some way, but that, no matter what color or sex, people are born with different natural skills which can help them to succeed in areas that someone else could not therefore they are not equal. The only possible way to mold our language towards an egalitarian society would be to outlaw certain words and phrases. This law would be virtually impossible to enforce Faulk 2 due to the incredible number of people, not only in the world but even just in large cities. The only way to enforce a law of this kind would be to have microphones in every room of every building and on every street corner that would detect if an illegal word was said and issue a ticket of some form, as in the movie Demolition Man. Ironically, if this was to happen, we still would not be living in an egalitarian society because our government would not consider us equal enough to be responsible for our own language. If this kind of system were to be installed I believe that it would cause an overthrow of the government and lead to an anarchist society. People are not going to be told what they can and cannot say. This "language law" would also never be passed under our government; the first amendment of the constitution guaranties free speech to all citizens. As far as unwritten language laws, well, they may exist in some parts of society but not in all. Take for example rap music, here is a quote from Eazy-E off the Eazy-Duz-It album, "Ren is a nigger who don't give a fuck to a pussy ass nigger trying to press his luck..." In this quotation Eazy-E is not only using the word nigger to refer to an enemy but also to his friend, Ren, who is in his group... This is not the end of the termpaper!
