Since many different groups are infringing upon the rights given by the constitution , I must affirm today’s resolution that ownership of assault weapons is justified. I will provide a few key definitions from Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary. Assault Weapon- a fully automatic rifle, carbine or submachine gun. (The term assault weapon originated from the military.) Fully automatic- when the trigger is suppressed the gun will continue firing until the magazine is empty. Infringe- to encroach upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another. My core value is Constitutional Rights; people are given rights in the constitution and should not be restricted from using their constitutional rights. The constitution is the basis of America, weaken constitutional rights, and you weaken America. I stand affirmative for three main reasons: 1. Many people need assault weapons as protection. 2. Banning these weapons will have no effect on violent crime. 3. Guns are a civilizing influence. Allow me to fully develop my first contention that many people need assault weapons as protection. Many Los Angeles business owners did in the Korean community during the riots of 1992. Hundreds of undefended stores were looted and burned - while shops that were defended, often with weapons that would be banned by proposed "assault weapon" laws, survived unscathed. Hopefully, none of us will ever need our "assault weapons" - just as we hope we'll never need our fire extinguishers, insurance, emergency food and water, home alarm systems or bomb shelters. But hope is not enough. We need to be prepared. And when it comes to protecting our homes and families, we want - and more importantly, we have the right to - the most powerful means legally available. It is true that stray bullets sometimes kill innocent people. But does this mean that everyone should be deprived of his or her right to keep and bear arms? A man yells "Fire!" in a crowded theater which is not burning; twenty people are killed in the stampede for the exits. Should the First Amendment be taken away for all because of this misuse of free speech by one? Moving on to my second contention, banning these weapons will have no effect on violent crime. No matter how many laws are enacted and prisons built, criminals will always obtain guns... This is not the end of the termpaper! Register below to see the complete version of this term paper.
