The English Language

     There are three main periods in the history of the English language.  They are
as follows: Old English (450-1100), Middle English (1100-1500), and Modern
English (1500-Present).
Examples of Old English

     The following passage is the Anglo-Saxon version of The Lord’s Prayer:
Fæder ure
þu þe eart on heofonum,
Si þin gehalgod. Tobecume þin rice.
Gewurþe ðin willa on eorðan swa swa on heofonum.
Urne gedæghwamlican hlaf style us to dæg.
And forgyf us urne gyltas, swa swa we forgyfað urum gyltendum.
And ne gelæd þu us on costunge, ac alys us of yfele. Soplice.
