The Cold War

The Cold War was known as an open yet restricted rivalry that developed after the World War II between the U.S. and the Soviet Union and their allies. The Cold war was fought for political and economic reasons. Their range of weapons was limited. Although both sides had nuclear weapons both sides were also sacred of using them in actual combat.  The term, "Cold War", was first
used by the American financier and presidential adviser Bernard Baruch during a congressional debate.
     During the late 1940’s and the early 1950’s the Cold War got more intense. At this time, the United States and it’s European allies formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO, which it was called, was in fact a unified military attack command to resist the Soviet presence in Europe.  Subsequent events, including the rejection by Eastern European nations of the European Recovery Program and the creation of the Cominform, led to the Brussels Treaty signed by most western European  countries. Among the goals of that pact was the collective defense of it’s members. The Berlin blockade that began in March 1948 led to negotiations between Western Europe, Canada, and the United States that resulted in the North Atlantic Treaty.

     Another influential causes of the Cold War was when the Soviet-supported Communist government of North Korea invaded U.S.-supported South Korea in 1950. This was later formally known as the Korean War. It first began as a war when the north invaded the south. The conflict swiftly developed into a limited international war involving the United States, and 19 other nations. From a general viewpoint, the Korean War was one of the by-products of the cold war. The reason the North Koreans attacked the South had to do with internal Korean Politics north and south of the 38th parallel.  North Korea attacked South Korea without the Knowledge of either the Soviet Union or the People’s Republic of China. The Soviet Union, which expected a war at any time, was boycotting the United Nations. The Communist government of China, meanwhile, was hoping to invade the island of Taiwan without having to deal with a military response from the United States. The war first started when the Northerners invaded South Korea. After the strike, the United States sent reinforcements in to help the South Koreans. The united States would have stopped at nothing to stop the spread of communism. Nonstop fighting went on until finally...
