               Author’s Point of View
In the book The Nation Takes Shape, by Marcus Cunliffe, the author has one main point of view, that he expands on throughout the entire novel.  That point of view concerns the first half-century of life under the newly formed government, under the constitution. He talks about the ways America began to achieve its own identity in the world in those years.  He shows us how colonials began to become Americans, how a new nation found itself. He also shows an American character emerging as the new nation expanded across the continent.
The author highlights many big events in that time period that back his point of view.  The government had many achievements during this time period.  “ A respectable Army and Navy, as well as the Judiciary, Legislative, Executive and other establishments of the Government, have, during the same period, been organized and respectably maintained.  Forts, navy yards, and dry docks had been constructed.  In 1789 America’s coastline was marked by only eight or ten lighthouses; in 1839 by two hundred and fifty.  Harbors had been improved, rivers and lakes rendered more navigable, roads and public buildings constructed. From a mere seventy five post offices, scattered bout the Union, the number had soared to over twelve thousand.  There were now twenty five hundred miles of canals, though none had existed while Washington was in office; and the railroads “ beginning only ten or twelve years ago, are already completed over one thousand miles.”  Schools, colleges, lyceums, and institutes were multiplying in scores.(1)  As you can see from that example, this time period certainly did show how our nation was growing into the power that it is today, and taking shape.    That is the author’s point of view, that the time period of 1789-1837 was a great period of change for our nation, that shaped the power that it was to become today.
                   New Insights
There are many things that I have learned from the novel about our country.  In this section of my analysis, I will highlight some of the things that I have learned from the book.  One thing that I have learned is that our country was shaped and its foundation for greatness was laid in those fifty years.  One thing that I have learned is that not everyone totally supported the idea of the National Bank.  With the slightly hesitant approval of the President and in face of anguished protest by the secretary of state.  A Bank of...
