FREEDOM

Dear, Mrs. Gerry Spence
Recently, I've read your story "Easy in the Harness: The Tyranny of Freedom," and I was amazed by the content of your creation.  I found your definition of absolute freedom very interesting.  I agree that absolute freedom is "pure hell," and I agree that a person who is totally free is a dead person, the person who does not depend on anybody, or anything.  Obviously, a lot of people in our society have chosen this kind of freedom; otherwise, there would not be such high suicide rate.  I also agree that "we spend our freedom like careless children with too many pennies."  People seek the recognition of society, friends, and even neighbors, giving up the personal freedom to say what they want.  Others give up their personal freedom to feel loved and needed.
You brought an example of old Jack, who was freer than anybody else you've known.  I have to tell you that old Jack was freer than anybody else I've known also was.  Jack grew his own food, made his own clothing, he always said what he wanted, and a lot of people did not like him, but everybody respected him.  However, who would choose to live the kind of life that Jack had, would you?  I know I would not.  For me freedom means to be happy, to wake up in the morning and think, "I do not need nothing more."  However, this is I, and for someone else the concept of freedom is different.  For someone who sits behind the bars, the definition of freedom is much simpler, because all that person wants, is just to get out.  For someone who is suffering from discrimination and oppression freedom would mean equality, and for someone who suffers the pain form the deadly disease, freedom means death.  Different people have different definitions of freedom, depending on their situation or the environment, the way they were brought up and the views and opinion they gained throughout their lives.
People choose to free themselves, or to give up some personal freedoms, in order to find their place in the society, or in order to make themselves happy.  Some people choose to depend on others and their lives are easier in some way.  However, they always feel insecurity of this dependence, and being stock in one place.  Their lives are based on a lot of small elements with the only option.  And if something goes wrong, they end up in the complete chaos.  Others choose to follow a particular religion in order to feel that their lives make sense,...
