Purpose-    To investigate the features and basic operations of the compound microscope.

Materials-           Compound microscope          Cover slips
               Newspaper letters               Medicine dropper
               Scissors                    Coloured thread
               Ruler                         Glass slides


Procedure-                             Resolving power
          Cut a 1 cm square from a newspaper article.
          Obtain a glass slide, cover slip, and a medicine dropper.
          Make a temporary wet mount of the newspaper clipping, and add the cover slip.
          Adjust the nosepiece to the low-powered objective lens.
          Place the slide on the stage with the clipping centred over the hole.  Use the clips to hold the slide in position.
          Rotate the coarse-adjustment knob forward to the lower-powered objective lens. Don't let the objective lens get any closer than 0.5cm from the slide.
          Using one eye, look through the ocular lens.
          Slowly rotate the coarse-adjustment focus backwards until the image is clear.

Determining Focal Distance
          Cut two different coloured threads and place them on a glass slide.
          Make a temporary dry mount by placing one of the threads over the other in the form of an X.  Cover the threads with a cover slip.
          Place the slide on the stage so that the crossed threads are in the centre over the hole.  Use the clips to hold the slide in position.
          Rotate the coarse-adjustment knob forward so that the pow-power objective approaches the slide. Do not allow the objective to touch the slide.
          View the crossed threads by slowly rotating the coarse-adjustment knob.
          Use the fine adjustment knob to focus only on the top thread.
          Rotate the revolving nosepiece to the medium-power objective.
          Use the fine adjustment to focus on the upper tread.
          Rotate the nosepiece to the high-power objective and use the fine adjustment to focus.

           Switch the nosepiece to the low-power objective and examine the length of the     thread.
          Repeat this procedure for the medium and high power objectives.
