LAND
Ukraine's size is about 233,000 sq. miles.  It is located to the north of the Black Sea.  It is bordered by Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland.  Most of the land is flat.  The only uplands are the Carpathian Mountains, located in the southwest part of the country, and the Crimean Mountains, located along the southern coast. The climate of Ukraine is temperate and subtropical.

PEOPLE  
Ukraine has a population of about 52 million people. This represents 18% of the population of the former Soviet Union.  The birth rate of this country is 14/1,000 and the death rate is 12/1,000.  The infant mortality rate is 22 for every 1,000 babies born. The life expectancy for males is age 65 and for females the age is 75.

LANGUAGE
The native language of Ukraine is Ukrainian. This language is a mixture of both the Russian language and the Polish language. Russian is also widely spoken, with about 88% of the people speaking these languages.  

RELIGION
Religion is a broad area because there are a lot of different religions practiced in Ukraine.  Most believers are Orthodox Christians.  There is also a large Eastern-rite Catholic population in the western part of the country. Protestant, Judaic, and Moslem religions are also practiced. The major churches are the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Baptist Church, and the Ukrainian Evangelical Alliance.
     
EDUCATION
     In Ukraine, all citizens are guaranteed an equal opportunity for a free education.  There are 22,300 general education schools in the whole country.  There are also 778 schools for higher learning.  The literacy rate for males is 100% and for females this number is 98%.

FOOD
     Ukrainian food is closely related to the customs of the Ukrainian people.  It is famous for its diversity and quality of flavor.  Ukrainian people like soups and dairy products. The most popular Ukrainian meal is “borshch” which is renowned worldwide. It is a thick soup, which includes mushrooms, beans, meat, and prunes.  Stuffed cabbage is also a favorite meal.  

HOLIDAYS
     Many holidays are celebrated during periods of transition from one type of agricultural activity to another.  Easter is celebrated in spring, which is a time of warmth and rebirth. The “Ascension Day” is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter.  It is tradition for people to go out to check the progress of wheat during this time.  The Trinity is celebrated in summer.  Ukrainian people decorate t...
