In the article entitled “When IP met Sonet,” editorial director of Telephony discusses the integration of Internet Protocol and the synchronous optical network; mainly Lucent Technologies’ attempt to create the optical and electronic interface.  In October 1997, Lucent announced a $350 million investment in its fiber optic operations in Norcross, GA.  (Titch 116)  Northern Telecom and NEC are also working on some major fiber optics projects.  Senior executive VP of NEC suggests that the data rate for user interface might soon be 10 Mbps.  He also adds that by the 21st century, the speeds could reach the terabits.  The article continues on explaining the fast moving transition from circuit-switched architectures to packet-switched connectionless platforms.  The backbone networks are incorporating IP routers, hopefully accommodating the large amounts of traffic that grows on a daily basis.
Since the IP is probably used more than our telephones to call relatives, it is imperative to integrate fiber technology along with IP.  The Sonet will help with the large amounts of Internet traffic, but is it vitally important to have now?  Perhaps to the common businessperson who sees words like “deadline, urgent, or immediately” on a day to day basis.  IP routing is done successfully with ATM switching systems.  Although some systems supporting Internet connection goes down often due to traffic, will we be able to rely on the rapid shift of optical fiber.  A big question that is always an issue when it comes to better and faster is, of course, how much?
