Tom Robinson was a young black man who kept to himself.  He was a very
private man , yet he didn’t cause any problems.  He would have been accepted, no
doubt, except for the fact that he was black.  The color of Tom’s skin made his life
a living hell.
He was persecuted by many people.  Bob Ewell accuses Tom of the
rape of his daughter, Mayella.  Bob is a white man with a drinking problem who
takes his anger out on his daughter by physically abusing her.
Bob accuses Tom of raping Mayella in hopes of forgetting or hiding his own
problems.  He wants it to look as though they have the perfect home life.  Bob in
turn takes advantage of Tom’s differences and frames him for the rape.
The case went to trial.  The jury could not look past the color of Tom’s skin
and convicted Tom of the murder.  Atticus Finch, Tom’s defendant,   said,
“Thomas Jefferson once said all men are created equal, a phrase  that the Executive
branch at Washington is hurling at us.” (207)  Obviously the jury did not see to
agree that all men are created equal.
Atticus treated Tom as an equal.  Atticus spoke nothing but the truth , “she
was white, tempted a Negro.  She did something that in our society was
unspeakable:  she kissed a black man.”  (206)
Even after Tom was convicted of the rape Atticus planned to take the case to
another town where racism wasn’t as strong.  But, Tom was not so sure about this
idea.  He tried to run from the problem because he feared for his life.  Tom’s escape
was stopped as his life was taken.
“We had such a good chance, I told him what I thought, but I couldn’t in
truth say that we had more than a good chance,”  Atticus said as he was saddened
and disappointed in Tom’s death.
Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Alabama.  She attended three
colleges:  Hutingdon College, the University of Alabama and Oxford University.
She studied law, while engaging in writing.  Lee’s clear thinking and logical
viewpoint allowed her to use her ideas in her novels.  She is able to tell a story from
the eyes of a young child.
To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, which was during the civil
rights movement.  The book was a sure bet to help people realize the cruelty an...
