Night

Authorial Background:

     Elie Wiesel was born in Hungary in 1928.  When he was still a boy, he was deported with is family to Auschwitz and then to Buchenwald, where his parents and younger sister died.  Night, his first book is a memoir of these experiences.  After the war he moved to Paris, where he adopted the French language and lived for a decade.  His work as a journalist took him to Israel and finally to the United States, where he now makes his home in New York City.  Since 1976 he has been Andrew Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University.

Literary Period:

     The literary period for this story is Contemporary.

Setting:

The setting of Night starts at Eliezers’ home, in Sighet.  Then it changes when the Germans take Wiesel’s family to the concentration camps in Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

Characters:

     Mosh the Beadle-  a homeless man who taught Eliezer about the synagogue, and
                                          taught Eliezer about the Jewish religious books.

Hilda- the eldest daughter the family.

Bea- the second eldest member of the family.

Eliezer- was the middle member of the family, went with his father to the
                          concentration camps,  and who suffered the most.

Tzipora- the child of the family, was separated from the family at the selection.

SS officer- ruthless men who made the Jews work relentlessly, and abusers.

Theme:

     The theme of Night is the suffering a war can bring.  During the war countless numbers of Jews were massacred, families were separated, and spirit was lost.  The world should find ways to dethrone leaders that are sick and demented such as Adolf Hitler, the bearer of the suffering.

Plot Summary:

     This horrifying story starts in Sighet, where Eliezers family is living happily, then the Hungarian police come and take them out of their home and place them in ghettos.  Life wasn’t bad in the ghettos, they had their own community, and a sense of safeguard was developing.  Then they were thrown on a train and taken to the first stop, where the family was broken up.  Eliezer and his father were still together, but all the women of the family were taken.  Eliezer and his father stayed together throughout the whole story.  They stayed together through all the selections, checking to see if the Jew is worth keeping,  and al the hardships.  They were taken to Auschwitz to work, and when the Russians were coming, the Jews had to run to the next camp in Buchenwald a ...
