      The first great Sage of China, Ch段u K置ng, developed many unique and useful
philosophies in his lifetime. They were so highly regarded that they were turned into the
religion of Confucianism. His teachings have helped shape the society of present day
China.
     Ch段u K置ng was born in China in 551 BC, during the Han Empire. When he was
three years old his father died, leaving his mother and him broke. She still managed to
give K置ng a good education, despite their money problems. As he was growing up the
word of his great wisdom was widely known. At nineteen years old he was offered the
job of Keeper of the Granaries, which he took, and, also at the age of nineteen, he got
married. A year later his wife gave birth to a baby boy, who K置ng was somewhat
disappointed with because he didn稚 have the same beliefs as his father, and he was
promoted from Keeper of the Granaries to The Superintendent of the Fields. Around that
time men from his village and neighboring ones started coming to him for advise. They
present him the name K置ng-fu-tze (Confucius in English) meaning K置ng the
Philosopher. His mom dies when he is 23, so he follows the Chinese custom of mourning
a parents death for three years.
     He turns his life around during those three years, and decides not to return to his
old occupation after the mourning period is over. He returns to society, not as
Superintendent of the Fields, but as a teacher, teaching his convictions. By the measly
age of 34 he has over 3,000 pupils and followers. When he is 53 years old he accepts an
offer to be the Chief-magistrate of Chung-tu. The job ...
