     My science current event is called "Drug or food?  Patients Stumble Into Gray Area".  John Kovarik, a lawyer in South Palm Beach in Florida, has a life threatening genetic disorder known as Wilson’s Disease.  To fight his symptoms he needs an effective treatment to keep copper from accumulating in is body which will destroy his vital organs.  He was picking up his medicine when his insurance company, Humana Inc., refused to pay for it.  When his insurance company refused to pay he called them from the pharmacy counter.  The problem is that Galzin is zinc acetate, and zinc is sold both as prescription drug and over the counter as a food supplement.  The supplement and the food are supposed to be the same, but the food supplement is not licensed by the food and drug administration.  
     When Humana questioned why it should pay for a prescription drug when the supplement was available.  Only $95 for a months supply.  Valerie Kennedy, a Humana spokesperson, said, "We do not cover nutritional supplements."  "The cost is not the crucial issue it is the safety of the patient," said Dr. Carole Ben-Maimon, a senior vice president.  A product can only be a drug if a company tests it for safety and efficacy, receives approval from the FDA, and makes the product according to fe...
