Title IX

In 1972, Title IX became the law that gave all women an equal opportunity in athletics.  Women would, form this day on, be given all of the things that men had already had for several years.  This includes sporting facilities, uses of equipment, equal scholarship availability, etc.  This law would change the way women in  America look at athletics, and would increase the number of participants.   The law has brought  women a long way but there is still some controversy over law.  Many men's coaches are angry over the fact that title IX is taking away some of their men's sports to provide equality among male and female sports.  Title IX, though, is the last chance for women of this nation to finally be a part of something that was, until 1972, extinct to them.

The impact Title IX has had on college athletics if far greater than that of any other level.  Women's athletics was never a concern for administration and athletic directors.   In response to a national invitation, 73 colleges became associate members and 205  colleges and universities became charter members of the newly formed AIAW (Woolum 18).  This stands for the Association  for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.  Because of Title IX, women and girls, benefited from more athletic participation opportunities and more equitable facilities.  More women began receiving athletic scholarships that gave them the opportunity for higher education  that some may not have been able to otherwise afford.
As with any law there are certa...
