     During the 1950's and 60's a wave of terror swept the nation.  The invention of the
atomic bomb rung in a new era of warfare and defense strategies.  If there ever were a
nuclear war the loser would not be determined by whoever surrendered first.  The loser
would be considered whoever was left alive.  The governments of the U.S. and Russia
started a massive arms race.  Americans made efforts to ensure their survival.  Our children
were taught to crouch in a corner and put their heads between their legs, and families
across the nation constructed bomb shelters capable of sustaining life for up to a year or
longer (the effectiveness of which is still in question).  At times it seemed that it was ...
