The novels Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy and The Great Santini by Pat Conroy are different in terms of order and detail.  It is from these events that the reader is able to see how the main character in each novel progresses with his growth, how he sees his life, and how others view his life.  In both novels the main character seems to view himself as normal but really he is very unique.  In The Great Santini the focus is more on the father and the way that he treats his children when he is back from his term in the marine corps, or possibly on his son and how he views his father.  While the obvious main character in the Prince of Tides is portrayed as a grown man looking back to his childhood and always thinking that he was the problem in his family, and that he was the trouble maker.

"Go ahead and laugh, jocko, but I break out in a cold sweat when I spot a flock of birds up yonder. The bad thing is that they’re usually behind you by the time see’em.  I mean they are behind you before your brain registers that you’ve just passed a bird.  You’ll know what I mean some day."
"How Dad?"
"When your a Marine pilot flying your own plane". (p.35).
The elements of the past in both of the novels help the reader in deciding the development of each main character.  In each novel, the reader can use these past events to build a world for the character in the present day.  This is how the author gets the reader ...
