The Scars Remaining
Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The Scars Remaining by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is a poem about the breaking up of a friendship.  Coleridge reveals intense emotion he still feels about the loss of a close friend.

In the first few lines of the poem Coleridge identifies that the friendship he is writing about is one he has had since he was a child.  At some time lies were told that caused major problems in their relationship.  Coleridge expresses that he realizes that nothing is constant except In heaven, but it makes him crazy to be separated from his friend.  He then relates his troubled friendship to the friendship between Roland and Sir Leoline from The Song of Roland.  In each case they were angry with one another and insults were passed between them.  Then they parted and never saw the other again.  Neither of them later found another friend as good as the friendship they lost.  Neither of them were willing to get back together.  Nothing they could do could get rid of the memories of the times they had with each other.

The Scars Remaining is a 19 line poem primarily written in iambic tetrameter.  The rhyme scheme is lines 1 & 2, 3 & 5, and  4 & 6 in each of the first two stanzas.  The only difference in the third stanza is the addition of a seventh line, which rhymes with the fourth and sixth lines.  Alliteration is used in line 17, "… neither heat, nor frost, nor thunder,".  Assonance is evident in line 11, "They parted ne’er to meet again!".  An example of a simile found in this poem is in line 15, "Like cliffs which had been rent asunder;".  Coleridge creates a vivid image in the readers mind with the use of imagery in lines 15-16.

Of the eight romantic characteristics commonly found during this time period, The Scars Remaining shows examples of three.  On line 8, with the reference to the Song of Roland, is a definite example of his interest in Legends.  The overall topic of the poem, the breaking of a friendship, shows his interest in emotions & feelings.  The theme also shows his interest in the individual.
