The following paper will discuss “Being There” and “The Truman Show.”  The first
paragraph will consist of a comparison/contrast of the two characters, Chance and
Truman.  The second paragraph will show how the plot of both movies are similar and yet
vary from one another.  Finally, the third paragraph will discuss how the media acts as a
huge influence in both lives.  
     Chance the gardner is the main character in the movie “Being There” and Truman
Burbank is the title character in “The Truman Show.”  Both characters live in a world
which was created for them.  In the case of Chance, who has lived in one house his whole
life, never having left until he was forced out after the death of the old man he lived with.
His only knowledge of the "real" outside world is through watching television.  Truman in
comparison lived in a world that was created for him, which was also shaped through
television.  However, in contrast Truman did not know that his life was shaped around
television, never gaining the knowledge, until the end, that his life was in fact a tv show.
Both characters in essence play a role, one which holds great influence over its viewers.
In “Being There” circumstances bring Chance the opportunity to meet the President of the
United States and discuss with him the financial welfare of the country.  Chance's
empty-headed pronouncements are taken to be profoundly intelligent and wisely insightful.
He becomes wealthy, is treated as a famous celebrity in the media, and the rich and
powerful, including politicians seek his advice, as he offers simplistic responses to the
most difficult questions. Truman in comparison, is unaware of the important role he plays
in society.  Living out his life in Seahaven, a small coastal community, millions of viewers
have watched him grow up on television for over 30 years.  Truman’s influence comes
