     Emily Dickinson was one of the greatest poets of the 19th century.  Many of her poems dealt with the issue of life and death, poem "186" is no exception.  This poem focuses on a speaker who has lived a life of not feeling alive within.  Throughout this poem she starts off with experiences of death, then heads into experiences of life, and why this life is so great.  Through the use of the concepts persona and implication I can get into to mind of the speaker and see how she deals with the issues of life and death, and experience the type of language she uses.  The first concept to be discusses is persona.
     In dealing with persona, I asked myself the question of why do I think the speaker is a middle aged woman?  There are many examples of how this conclusion was met.  Overall, it seems like the speaker has experienced a great deal in her lifetime.  In the second stanza, "And if I hold a Glass Across my Mouth-it blurs it-Physician's-proof of Breath-" shows her knowledge of how a doctor may have practiced in those days.  Although it seem very juvenile, technology was not even close to it is now.    In stanza's three and four, the speaker is speaking of a wake.  Most people that have lived a decent amount of years have attended a wake to mourn the loss of family or friends.  The way she describes it makes it sound as if she has been to a lot of them.  In stanza 5, she speaks of her coffin in a way that no child could ever think of.  The way she describes it is as a place of comfort and rest, a child would think of a coffin as dark, dreary, and scary.  Lastly in stanza 6, "And marked my Girlhood's name-So visitors may know-" refers to the fact that she has already set up a name for herself in life and she has an identity that people know her by.  The next concept to be discussed is implication.
